FOSS stands for Free Open Source Software, as in a source code that respects the freedom of users to modify a publicly available software.

An open source approach to software provides freedom to run, copy, distribute, research, edit and improve the source code. While frequently free of charge to use in basic scenarios, this is not always the case, and certainly not when technical support is required.

FOSS ensures that source code is available to users that do not want to depend on set of licenses to run and modify the software according to their particular use case.

Improvements to the source code should be contributed back to the public, which sometimes has a community of users around it. The activity level of the ‘community’ is a good indicator of ongoing innovations within and around the open source software that brings the community of users together.
